Dynamics of Two Mutually Coupled Slow Inhibitory Neurons

چکیده
Inhibition in oscillatory networks of neurons can have apparently paradoxical e ects, sometimes creating dispersion of phases, sometimes fostering synchrony in the network. We analyze a pair of biophysically modeled neurons and show how the rates of onset and decay of inhibition interact with the time scales of the intrinsic oscillators to determine when stable synchrony is possible. We show that there are two di erent regimes in parameter space in which di erent combinations of the time constants and other parameters regulate whether the synchronous state is stable. We also discuss the construction and stability of non-synchronous solutions, and the implications of the analysis for larger networks. The analysis uses geometric techniques of singular perturbation theory that allow one to combine estimates from slow ows and fast jumps.

Role of synaptic delay in organizing the behavior of networks of self-inhibiting neurons.
We consider a pair of mutually coupled inhibitory neurons in which each neuron is also self-inhibitory. We show that the size of the synaptic delay determines the existence and stability of solutions. For small delays, there is no synchronous solution, but a stable antiphase and a stable on-state solution. For long delays, only the synchronous solution is stable. For intermediate delays, either...
متن کاملIntermittent synchronization in a network of bursting neurons.
Synchronized oscillations in networks of inhibitory and excitatory coupled bursting neurons are common in a variety of neural systems from central pattern generators to human brain circuits. One example of the latter is the subcortical network of the basal ganglia, formed by excitatory and inhibitory bursters of the subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus, involved in motor control and affected...
متن کاملOnset of Phase Synchronization in Neurons Conneted via Chemical Synapses
We study the onset of synchronous states in realistic chaotic neurons coupled by mutually inhibitory chemical synapses. For the realistic parameters, namely the synaptic strength and the intrinsic current, this synapse introduces non-coherences in the neuronal dynamics, yet allowing for chaotic phase synchronization in a large range of parameters. As we increase the synaptic strength, the neuro...
متن کاملInhibitory loop robustly induces anticipated synchronization in neuronal microcircuits.
We investigate the synchronization properties between two excitatory coupled neurons in the presence of an inhibitory loop mediated by an interneuron. Dynamic inhibition together with noise independently applied to each neuron provide phase diversity in the dynamics of the neuronal motif. We show that the interplay between the coupling strengths and the external noise controls the phase relatio...
متن کاملCanards, Clusters, and Synchronization in a Weakly Coupled Interneuron Model
Applying a low current to a recent biophysical model for inhibitory neurons in the cortex leads to mixed mode oscillations (MMOs), a mixture of spikes and subthreshold oscillations. At higher currents, the neurons fire regularly. We show that a specific slow potassium current underlies this behavior. Next we reduce this five-dimensional biophysical model for an inhibitory neuron to three dimens...
